The article is devoted to analyzing the possibilities and limitations of using certain crime forecasting methods to predict the crime situation in Ukraine in the post-war period. The author examines the extent to which traditional approaches, such as extrapolation, expert assessments, mathematical modeling, scenario-based and sociological forecasting, the analogy method, and modern technologies based on big data and artificial intelligence, are capable of providing a reliable forecast of the crime situation in conditions of profound social transformation. It is emphasized that the war has led to the emergence of new crime factors, the destruction of familiar social patterns, and a significant distortion of the information field, which significantly reduces the effectiveness of many existing forecasting methods. The article shows that each of the approaches considered has both advantages and critical shortcomings that make it impossible to use it independently to create a complete picture of future crime trends. Thus, the extrapolation method loses its reliability due to the breakdown of familiar social trends and the emergence of qualitatively new factors of crime influence. Expert assessments suffer from subjectivity and the risk of groupthink. Mathematical modeling is complicated by a lack of relevant data and the unpredictability of new socio-economic processes. The scenario approach, although it has the potential to adapt to different conditions, depends largely on the quality of hypotheses and does not always take into account the complexity of the postwar context. Sociological forecasting faces limitations in terms of representativeness in the context of large-scale migration and a decline in the reliability of surveys. The analogy method cannot take into account the uniqueness of Ukraine’s post-war experience, and artificial intelligence methods, although technologically advanced, depend on past, often irrelevant data and are not adapted to forecasting under non-standard conditions. The conclusion is that a comprehensive approach to forecasting is needed, combining different methods, flexible analytical thinking, and consideration of the dynamics of post-war reality.
